Eligibility

Public service law is hard. Paying for law school doesn’t need to be.

North Carolina public interest attorneys have the opportunity to apply for NC LEAF law school loan repayment assistance. While funding is limited, all eligible attorneys are encourage to apply and funding will be considered for as many applicants as possible. Applications open annually in early November. Applications will then be considered by the NC LEAF Board, and all applicants will be notified of their status in February.  For those accepted into the program, loan assistance will begin in April.

Eligibility

  • An Applicant must be employed full time in North Carolina in a public interest field.
  • An Applicant must have earned a J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school and be a licensed member in good standing of the North Carolina State Bar.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with ten (10) years or less of active practice of law. These ten (10) years need not be consecutive.
  • An applicant’s annual public interest salary must not exceed $101,299. The Board will also consider income from other sources including spouse/domestic partner earnings, alimony, child support, part-time or contract work, rental income, family trusts, or other resources.
  • Priority will be given to Applicants who have at least $10,000.00 remaining in law school debt.
